Network Attached Storage is a file storage device running on a local network that allows file sharing over a standard Ethernet connection.
Usually there is no keyboard or screen connected to NAS devices, they are managed through web browsers.
Every NAS device in the local network has an IP address. Users access via this IP.
One of the benefits of NAS devices is to allow multiple users on the network to access the same files. If more capacity is needed, they can be expanded by installing more drives.
NAS devices are more affordable than SANs. For this reason, they are more preferred in small and medium sized enterprises.
It is easy to use, it can be installed and used, often without the need for an IT staff.
